PNP arrests Bayan Muna Rep. Joel Virador

Bayan Muna swiftly condemned the arrest today of one of its partylist representatives at the Davao City airport.

The human rights advocate-turned-legislator Joel G. Virador was to rebook his plane ticket to Manila at the PAL office at around 2:00-2:30 pm when he was approached by elements of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

The PNP-CIDG team said he was being arrested by virtue of a warrant issued by the Justice Department in Manila but they did not show any copy of the purported warrant. He was brought to the PNP-CIDG local headquarters at Camp Leonor for interrogation and questioning.

Virador then called his wife Imelda and local government officials led by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to inform them of his arrest.

Duterte informed Speaker Jose De Venecia and House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles (1st Dist., Davao City) about Virador’s arrest, through a phone call at 4:00 pm.

De Venecia and Nograles assured that Virador would be received at the House of Representatives.

Virador flight for Manila leaves Davao City at 6:45 pm. He will be accompanied by Duterte, Davao City Councilor Angela Librado, Attys. Carlos Isagani and Edison Batacan as well as two PNP-CIDG personnel.
