Below is the press statement of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines on the death threat against Newsbreak managing editor Glenda Gloria:
August 3, 2005
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines views with deep concern the death threat received by Glenda Gloria, managing editor of Newsbreak magazine. The incident, in which a man sent Ms. Gloria a wreath for the dead, should not be taken lightly.
This incident shows that the enemies of press freedom in this country are still at it, trying to instill fear in the hearts of journalists.
We urge the authorities to investigate the threat received by Ms. Gloria and to bring those behind it to justice.
We also urge them to intensify their efforts to solve the numerous cases of death threats received by many other journalists, as well as the murders of our colleagues.
