The Da Vinci Code

I’m not the type who reads bestsellers. Usually, it takes me years before I read books raved about by everyone. It took me three Harry Potter books to pass before I had an interest to might as well read the first one. Last week, while I was rummaging through some books I bought but haven’t finished, I saw Dan Brown’s celebrated novel The Da Vinci Code and decided what the heck, might as well read the damn thing.

Voila! I got hooked. I was supposed to write something political here but I wasn’t able to jot it down because I was reading, what else?

Thing is I’ve always been a believer of the sacred feminine and the “grand conspiracy” against it. History is made by those in power, as the book suggests. My history professor would even add that history is made by those who have the means to change or twist it. If that’s the case, then it’s really up to us to decode our own truths or leave it to faith.

Name Game

I read somewhere that a villain in Krystala–ABS-CBN’s new fantasy series–is called “Haribon,” which is the name of an environmental organization. Incidentally, the owners of the network is also running an enviromental task force called Bantay-Kalikasan. Hmmmmm…

Those Shampoo Beauties

A group of sexy starlets stripped in a pictorial held in front of a Catholic Church in Manila. This attracted the attention of an excited crowd. The police arrived to arrest them. The city council later declared them “persona non grata.” Reports say charges of grave scandal were filed in court against them.

The controversial shampoo beauties–Ivory Ibanez, Jeanette Joaquin, Kat de Santos, Kuhdet Honasan, Mikaela Monteverde, Palmolive Palma, Pantene Palomino, Rejoice Rivera–are now invoking freedom of expression.

In Imelda’s World…

Did you see GMA-7 reporter Tina Panganiban Perez’s interview with Imelda Marcos last night?

From that interview, we could conclude that in Imelda’s world, the following are inalienable truth:

  • Martial Law gave us not only freedom, justice, and democracy but also dignity and identity.
  • The dictator’s reign was peaceful.
  • Imelda was never extravagant.
  • Martial Law was one of the greatest periods in Philippine history.

On the other hand, these are fiction:

Gloria’s Deadlines

“I am not a traditional politician who likes to give promises and deadlines…”
– President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, March 8,2001

No matter how much she denies it, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo just loves giving deadlines.

A news release posted on the government’s official website said the President on Friday gave newly-installed Customs Commissioner George Jereos “two months to stamp out smuggling.”

“Let’s zero in once again on smuggling… While we clean up our finances, we shall also rid society of its dregs and misfits,” the President was quoted as saying during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Incorporated (FFCCCII).

Another release posted today on the same site said the Palace will closely monitor the Bureau of Custom’s compliance to the President’s order.

Oh really? Wish ko lang!
