Senator Antonio Trillanes IV

Antonio Trillanes IV, who rose to national prominence as the spokesman of the young rebel soldiers who staged the so-called Oakwood mutiny on July 27, 2003, is now a senator of the Republic. He was proclaimed at the Commission on Elections earlier today.

Trillanes’ inclusion in the list of winners in the senatorial race came as a surprise for many reasons: one, he consistently ranked outside the magic 12 in the pre-election surveys of SWS, Pulse Asia, and other polling firms; two, he was in detention and was not able to campaign; and of course, the Magdalo’s method was regarded by many as too radical.

Laymen or Clergy?

Archbishop Oscar Cruz, though an entry on his blog, has asked Pope Benedict XVI not to accept President Arroyo’s invitation to visit the Philippines.

His Excellency wrote that “a papal visit to the country might be neither wise nor prudent these times.”

“The country is anything but safe and crime free. The visit will give the government officials the salivating occasion to make money for themselves. Furthermore, a papal visit would dignify a national leadership that is suffering from dire lack of moral ascendancy not to mention its big socio-political liabilities,” Archbishop Cruz continued.

Rounin

I’m writing this while we’re watching Rounin, a fantasy-adventure series shown on weekdays in ABS-CBN.

Rounin is reportedly not doing well in terms of ratings, which is sad, because the show is a good one. It features great special effects and exciting fight scenes.

Its cast includes popular young stars like Shaina Magdayao, Rayver Cruz, and Angelica Panganiban. Lucky Manzano, who plays Juris, is great in his fighting scenes, but he needs more training in drama.

I should log off now. Tonight’s episode ended after the villains brought Creon (Rafael Rosell) back to life.

Devanadera on SC’s Batasan 5 Decision

Radio DZBB and GMANews.tv reported that the administration will appeal the Supreme Court’s decision that dismissed the rebellion case against the Reps. Satur Ocampo, Teddy Casiño, Joel Virador, Liza Maza, and Crispin Beltran–the activist lawmakers collectively known as the Batasan 6.

The reports quoted Solicitor General Agnes Devanadera –a former Government Corporate Counsel–as saying that the “the government decided to file an appeal to the High Court to bring back the stability of the justice system.”

Devanadera has a point there. The SC sided nga naman with the “destabilizers.” Hehe.

Missed Us?

We have been very busy at work that we were not able to blog for around a month. A group of Turkish hackers even defaced our homepage while we were on blog leave.

But since the the election has passed and we’re now just waiting for the results, our load at work returned to normal. We’re also expecting new Internet connection so we probably blog more often.

Our WordPress has been upgraded to 2.2, and we’ve started to categorize our entries.

We hope you will welcome us back as we continue to comment on local and foreign news and issues.

Surface Jay-jay Burgos and His Companions!

The Families of Desaparecidos for Justice (DESAPARECIDOS) condemned the disappearance of Jonas Joseph Burgos and Melisa Reyes, on April 28, in Quezon City.

Burgos, or Jay-Jay, 38, son of press freedom icon Jose “Joe” Burgos Jr., failed to come home to his family in Tandang Sora, Quezon City on April 28. His anxious family tried to contact him through his cellphone the whole night, but it was only at 10:46 AM the next day that they received messages from him which did not make any sense. His family was still able to talk to
him on the phone but his voice sounded drowsy and his words did not make sense as if he were drugged.
